York, by others

A few things I’ve noticed and admired on the web in recent weeks/months.

Shed Seven video, 2001

Rick Witter disrobes at various locations around my parish …

I didn’t like (York’s own) Shed Seven when they were famous and everyone was talking about them. But have been won over since. And particularly by this video, which was filmed more than a decade ago, but which I’ve only just seen. Filmed in many familiar locations, some recently included on these pages: the bridge over the railway line near the YCFC ground at Bootham Crescent, ‘Asylum Lane’ (Bridge Lane), the grounds of Bootham Park Hospital, Bootham, Gillygate (how it looked before the York St John building dominated the Clarence St end).

Particularly for Stephen, who walked so many times over that bridge and along Asylum Lane. Thanks to @jimwaterson for alerting me to its existence.

Tony Cole’s photos of York, particularly this one taken at Bootham Crescent.

Archives coming alive

In which a pupil of Mill Mount School identifies herself in a school photo from the 1920s – the first decade of that school – I attended in its last decade (1980s).

An example of what happens when the archives are made more easily accessible to the people who have the stories about those images.

One day perhaps they will be so open that I won’t have to pay City of York Council to include their archive images of York on these pages …

For now, hope the above brought a smile.
