Water Lanes

Pub next to flooded river

The river’s up again, as June’s heavy rainfall, having accumulated in the Ouse, works its way through the city centre. Here’s the bottom of Cumberland Street, yesterday afternoon, with the Ouse approaching the door of The Lowther pub.

A sign at the top of the street advertised that The Lowther was showing the England game on the TV that evening. How many people managed to access the pub before kick-off – or indeed leave the pub after the game – I’m not sure.

These riverside businesses take it all in their stride. They have to – as a rising river is a fairly common occurrence.

Pavement and floodwater
The streets here in the 19th century were known as the Water Lanes. You can see why, as the Ouse waters lap over the pavements.
