April daily photo: 2, handsome iron, underfoot

Embedded in a pavement … photo from 2 April 2015 (and this relic remains, a year on, probably)

After the previous ‘April daily photo’ from a whole 12 years ago, of something since destroyed, here’s a photo from a mere one year ago of something that’s still there as far as I know, and will probably remain for years to come.

Sometimes I go out wandering and see what I find, and sometimes I go out with particular targets in mind. This was one of them.

We’re often told to pay more attention to what’s above our natural eye level: to look up, beyond the shop fronts, to architectural details higher on buildings. But it’s also often interesting to look down. Particularly beyond the city centre, in the 19th century suburbs. As mentioned before, on these pages.

This is underfoot. I know where it is and what it is, but in a way it doesn’t matter what it is and where it is, it’s just a handsome old thing.

One of many handsome old things, a detail, beyond the famous ‘historic core’.
