The Barbican Bookshop is closing down. They’ve been here on Fossgate for decades, with all those rooms of secondhand books in a shop apparently small when you see it from the front before you realise that it goes back such a long way from the street, and up narrow stairs.

The York branch of the high-street chain Past Times has to get first mention, the name now appearing sadly ironic. At the height of its popularity – mid 1990s? – many gifts were bought here, and before Christmas it was usually uncomfortably busy.
