Stonebow House: what to do?

The survey also asked ‘What do you think should happen to the building?’
Marc isn’t a fan …

Fill it with geese and demolish it at least six times to make sure it's dead.

This and other (rather more serious) thoughts — What would you like to see happen to the building? (PDF)

Many people also explained why they thought the building should be demolished, or kept.

A selection of comments — Thoughts on Stonebow House (PDF)

As agreed by contributors, your comments have been passed on to Helen Graham for use by the York: Living with History project. Thanks for your contributions to this debate.

What I was struck by the most while reading through your comments was how many people really truly loathe Stonebow House. In these surveys I always find that there’s a question I wish I’d asked, once I start reading your answers, and this time it would have been ‘Can you explain why you hate it so much?’ The building seems to be viewed by many people as an almost malevolent presence, which I find really interesting, and don’t really understand.

I’d like to end this page with a comment that stood out among so many negative responses to Stonebow House. A reminder that as children we can see magic and delight where perhaps as adults we see only grey concrete.
