Some things change, some don’t

In an effort to be less cynical and more open-minded regarding the York800 celebrations, I’ve just downloaded and read the 1212 York Charter Resource Pack from www.york800.com, which is clearly intended for teachers to use in schools.

It’s a bit worrying how many grammatical errors and typos there are in the first few pages (is it the dreaded ‘wrong version put online’ scenario?), but that aside – I was quite amused by this description of York in 1212:

“York use to smell, because of the
rotten meat from butchers at the
markets and a lack of proper toilets”

Anyone thinking what I’m thinking?
At least we’ve managed to sort out one of those problems, in the last 800 years ;)
