Thanks Bob, that's how I remember it too. Interesting to see that since I wrote this page some months back the pub has opened as the temporary 'Fleeting Arms' https://www.facebook.com/fleetingarmsyork

Though I don't have anything much on the South Bank area, there are a few pages on Holgate here on York Stories:
- About a boundary stone
- On the lovely Holgate Villa
- The windmill (from a few years back)
- and quite a few pages about the former carriageworks site, including the old canteen building and the sculpture and wildflower meadow

I hope those are of interest.
I remember the Bay Horse as the first place I managed to get served in when I was a dopey 15 or 16 year old in 84/85.

It had a brilliant atmosphere, full of bikers and young wanna be bikers like me with my leather & cut off denim.

I remember the instruction if the police decided to raid, was to quickly pour your drink on the floor.

Happy days!

Love the website, I only discovered it in the last couple of days, I'd love to see some articles on Holgate and South Bank in the future.

Will be subscribing shortly.

Thanks,
