P.S.The only Tourists,at that time,all wore blue uniforms of various hues,and occassionally slept in the “Canadian Hotel” just off Bootham/Marygate.

I remember the Shambles during my youth,when there was’nt a tourist in sight,York being more concerned
with factory work/muck/money,and winning a war.
On Saturday afternoon ,after errand lad work at a
Veg. Shop,was picking up our weekly meat joint ration at the butcher in Goodramgate,visiting Cussins and Light to pay weekly radio cost.Then across the Square,(the older version)and into the Shambles,Model shop 1’st on the left,where one could buy all the diagrams and equipment needed,(Balsa/Glue/Tissue Paint,and Dope)to build flying models as my all consuming young hobby.Never dreamt in those days it would one day become such a road surfacing controversy
