Hi Hazel some remains of those houses exist behind the Moss Street. The garages seem to have been built on top of the rubble: floor tiles and pieces of smashed toilets were in situ. Pls let me know if you’d like to look. Did you share yard and toilets with other shaws terrace houses? Or with the Moss street housing behind you?

I was born in January 1939 at 13 Shaws Terrace, off Blossom Street, There wasn’t abbatoir , when I grew up there and the narrow alleyway at the bottom led to Scarcroft Green and Scarcroft school , which I attended, the houses were small and two houses shared a back yard , and toilet, no hot water , a small kitchen with a large shallow sink , a coal fireplace , in the kitchen was a under stairs cupboard ( Where my Mam sister and I and the next door neighbours mother and kids, sheltered in the blitz of York ) , everyone in the street cared for their houses, and scrubbed their doorsteps daily. I remember Shaws Terrace and my home with fondness , good neighbours .

Excellent local info Alex, thanks for adding this information. Yes I think they were probably cleared as part of the 'slum' clearances, not sure when though, as these clearances seem to have continued through many of the decades of the middle part of the 20th century.
