I think you're right Martyn about the tree density in York. I've read that too. We've just recently lost the tree in Museum Street (for a planned bus stop extension) and might also lose the tree alongside the new atrium at the Star Inn nearby, they had applied to fell it. Hoping to add something on the subject of trees (again) soon.

Not sure about the A1237 proposals. Let me know if you find out any more on this?

Thanks for your support of the mulberry tree. Good to know it is being retained, and that Paul Woosey's plaque has also been kept in the square where it belongs.

AJH you beat me to it - was going to add this update, thank you. I've also been told that drawings of the proposed new treatment of the brick drum surrounding the tree will be put online in the next day or two, on this link.

Great news!! Update from the council website KS phase 2...

"The original proposals for the square showed the Mulberry being removed. Following a review of the proposals by the council’s design team, the tree will now be retained"

Many thanks to you for writing about this and for helping save the tree.

Very sad. Have emailed Guy Hanson. I think I'm right in saying that York actually has quite a low tree density per sq mile than other UK cities, much less than Leeds and Sheffield. We can't afford to lose them.

Do you know where the proposals to dual the A1237 are at ? My big concern is the fate of the Wheatlands Community Woodland should that go ahead. It would be a real tragedy if the roads lobby gets to trash such a vital community asset and increasingly biodiverse habitat for the sake of a few minutes off a journey time.
