I remember when the homestead was still home to the Rowntree family in the person of Peter Rowntree.
The last one to be a director at the Cocoa Works.
Sadly all those good philanthropic values of that old Quaker era were lost forever when the shareholders sold it down the river to Nestle .
Shame on all their houses comes to mind.
Not only locally by way of New Earswick model village and Rowntrees Park but all the in house care to its employees which included its rest home in Scarborough ( Dunollie a wonderful Arts and Crafts gentleman's residence ) where you were sent after illness at the companies expense for at least two weeks the family were a true cause for good in York.
