I have just come across this site. I went to classes at Marygate, in the late 50’s,dressmaking, tailoring, and cookery. The cookery was a City and Guilds course, basic, advanced and then a teachers course. I was able to use these skills when I moved from York. What a shame these places seem to no longer exist.

I remember visiting her there just before her retirement. She did good work and was much loved by all accounts – I have a photo of her making a speech in the grounds.
