Thanks for taking the time to write this article. Many of us Newport residents are shell shocked, not only by the loss of our beautiful mural but also by the callous and contemptuous way in which our elected councillors handled it’s untimely destruction. Newport Council has a history of demolishing our wonderful historical architecture and now it seems it has found other soft targets . We are fast running out of anything to be proud of in this bland and run-down city. Don’t let the same thing happen in York, it’s a beautiful city.

You’re right to draw a parallel between what’s happening in Newport and the attitude behind recent happenings in York. At the end of the BBC News story you link to Newport Council is quoted as saying that the mural ‘has served to remind us of Newport’s past, but we must now focus on Newport’s future’. The future, in this case, being another shopping centre. It’s the same story we get from James Alexander’s York City Council. Why do you care about this derelict old shed? Why do you hate the future?
