The Castle Museum has some more WW1 postcards, giving the propagandists’ view of war as a rather jolly affair. http://www.yorkcastlemuseum.org.uk/Page/ViewCollection.aspx?CollectionId=28

Whereas of course it was more as Sassoon describes it. Thanks Drake for including those lines of his, I didn’t know them. I’ve since found the poem. On the grim realities of war, and women who believed the propaganda:

Elizabeth - it’s nice to hear that other cards from the time are being carefully kept, and that yours have stayed with the family. What a wonderful thing to have.

Hard to believe that families give such things away.’ You can’t believe that British troops “retire”
When hell’s last horror breaks them, and they run,
Trampling the terrible corpses - blind with blood.’…… Siegfried Sassoon

I have an embroidered post card, carefully wrapped in tissue paper, similar to the one on the internet.

I also have a collection of postcards from WW1 sent by my paternal grandfather from Belgium to my grandmother and father.

Thank you Graeme. As we don’t have a last name, and no other information other than what’s shown above, I don’t think research can be taken any further, sadly.

I don’t mind - I’m seeing Tom as standing for all the ‘Tommies’ - as an unknown soldier.

This is such a touching story. The Regimental Museum next door to the Hilton in York may be able to help on tracking this down.
