Etty more than helped preserve the walls – he fought tooth and nail against an anarchical council full of their own importance, who wanted to knock them all down. He personally spent masses of his earnings as a highly respected and wealthy artist fighting the cause.

Both William Etty and George Hudson are situated Facing their Important Historic Contributions to the City. Equally as important as Richard “Dick” Turpin’s Grave, the Museums and York Minster.

Let those with more importance cast the first stone!

I didn’t know he helped to preserve the walls. As he was an artist he should stay outside the gallery. I like the fountain but I wouldn’t say it needs to be there, they could move that round the back.
