I wonder if anyone has any old photos of The Bay Horse, Marygate. I would love to see them. Before world war 2 there was a wrought iron arch in front of the front door of this pub . I would be fascinated to see pictures of that.

Unfortunately not!The last trading day was the 29th of May. It is currently owned by a development company. a company called Brunning and Price are hoping to give it a major makeover to include complete renovation of all external areas.Although this is a grade 2 listed property all listed items(although not a lot of these exist internally)will be protected. B&P only specialise in traditional buildings and all their renovations are beatiful. you can google them and look at their pedigree.

Lets not see another residential development, nobody around here wants that.

It seemed to be operating a a pub when I was there last week(Sept 7th top 10th). I have a special interest in the Bay Horse because in 1948, myself and a friend of mije - a York Minster quoir boy, were returning home from a night's caro singing -door to door on Christmas eve, and I dared my mate to stand in the archway door of the Bay Horse to see if we could earn a few coppers. We did it, and I ask you older people to think what £3. 12 and 6d meant to two 12 year olds in 1948. That's what we got. I'm 80 now and still singing, but that was just about my first 'public' performance. In those days it was the only real pub in Marygate, and was the meeting place for most of the adult residents of the streets that have now been demolished to make way for that car. park.
