I found out about The Roxy from a York girlfiend of the time and visited during the summer of 1985 with three other mates from Goole only to find thee other goolies there who were regulars at 'Le Roxy' who apparently or so they claimed kept the location secret. On arrival the door was closed, my experience of clubs was an open door with bouncers who barred the way until you had proved that you were local to the area, I knocked on the door, skeptical that we could get in, a very large chap opened the door gave us all the once over and let us in.

In my mind one of the Roxy's many impressive interior features was the Georgian staircase with a wrought iron balustrade. We ascended to the first floor, paid our entry fee and was admitted to the lux interior of plush red furnishings complete with a real shiny steel plated dancefloor, the walls were decorated with many framed pictures. We made ourselves comfortable, got on talking terms to the DJ who then kindly played our requests, She Sells Sanctuary, Liberator, The Wheel and to finish First and Last and Always. A great club with a great vibe and a nice clientele, Friday nights at the 'Le Roxy', perfection.

I met my wife in the Roxy when I was 19 back in 1989. Then about 11 years later, around the year 2000 I was working for the council and went into the offices that had replaced it. I had a funny feeling of deja-vu and at the reception I looked at the corner of the room and said to myself "I think I was sick in that corner". The receptionist gave me a funny look. Sorry if you live in one of the flats! It was a gritty club with sticky floors.
