St Georges "Field"was a misnomer,in my day it was covered with gravel, perfect for scrubbed knees, and the only grass was along the banks of the river, the fairground was accessed either under Skeldergate bridge,or from the road opposite the corn grinder, with toilets on the left,of the roadway entrance, and row of sideshows on the right.Still feel the buzz, with memories of the noisy air organ, blairing from the cocks and horses, the vision of the huge basket swinging high in the air, giving a nerve jangling frightening ride, the bashing/sparking and loud pop music of the bumper cars, all under toned by the roar of the diesel electric generating engines lining the road from gate way to baths,a very heady aural cocktail in its wartime and post war days.Wonder if any one else remembers and misses our George's Fairground, now car park.
